But how can we detect so many different scents? Each olfactory receptor neuron is capable of detecting multiple odor molecules, and our brain is able to combine these signals to create a unique representation of each scent.

In fact, our sense of smell is so sensitive that we can detect certain scents in incredibly small amounts. For example, we can detect a single drop of perfume in an Olympic-sized swimming pool!
